    Hi,
My friend and I are planning to go to New York too.But are thinking it probably would be hard to get jobs close to your accomodation,so we will prob head Long Island direction as depending on what part of the island you are you might only be an hour or more on the train from New York.

I was in New York last year. I stayed in a hostel called "Jazz on the park" and it was pretty cool. You can find lots of info around NYC for opening days for temp clerks in the banks and the hostel I stayed in was always looking for staff (Night security for the hostel and cleaners... 3 hours a day).

New York is pretty scary when you first get there, but the nightlife is brilliant.Other friends I had stayed outside the city and didn't find a job and had to go home. Just put in the effort.

You shouldn't be worried at all!
And how much you need depends on where you go in NY. Its a big state!
If your going to the city, I'd say proces are about the same, if not more for general living than in Ireland.

I ALWAYS just used my ATM card like when I would be at home. Only difference is taking out more than usual to avoid fees each time.

Look for accommodation first. You wont be able to open a bank account or get a job without a home address (In general).

Congrats! You'r going to love NYC. No, I didn't stay there all summer :) I moved out to queens for a ...bit ;) It's a great base though. Little up town, but only a 1 min walk to the nearest subway station. You also get a free (But pretty shitty) brekfast.

Be sure to go on one of the pub crawls organised by the staff, they are a great way to meet people.

    Have fun!

Hey J1, where abouts in queens did you stay? Im gettin a place somewhere in queens, just not sure where yet. is there any part that is more suited to students or irish or both!? Im going with my friend and his girlfriend so im praying we settle into some sort of community for the summer - dont want to be stuck with them for 3months!! Thats the one thing im conscious about such a big city, at least the resorts you are guaranteed a large amount of irish in one area.
  1.
Just wondering what would be the best option or bringing our initial money across would you reccommend travellers cheques? Cash? or simply online banking etc? as the dollar is pretty weak now we feel we should buy some soon and wondering if travellers cheques are the best to keep us going for first week or so?
also is there Any chance getting bar work in NY if under 21 but have lots of experience?

People, you see all that shit they told you about travellers cheques and having a certain amount of money on you when you get there - biggest pile of shit i've ever heard. Not once on the journey over from Dublin, was I, anyone on the flight I was on with on a J1, the other flight that came in at the same time as ours from Heathrow or anyone else i've been talking to out here who are on J1s was anyone asked to show how much money they had on them. If your underage, get an id. Without it you have no chance getting in anywhere, but even if you have it your pretty much guaranteed to get into a club, even if the picture looks nothing like you. Those are my pieces of advice
