I received a 300 fine for posession of cannabis 7 years ago. I also got a conviction for the offence, should of by right got probation but stupid solicitor made a mess of it for me. I was over in the states last march. I received a tourist visa from the embassy as I "commited a crime of moral turpitude". I told them I was just going to new york but ended up flying to chicago for a day and on to a festival in texas. I have applied for the J1 anyways, are my chance of getting it good? and should I tell them that I was in those other states as I never mentioned it when I was going before

You will NOT be granted a J1 Visa.
Have a chat with USIT but they will tell you the same thing.

If you have a conviction for ANY drug charge, it's seen as a crime of moral turpitude and the US don't look kindly on that at all.

Strangely enough, drink driving and endangering the lives of others is perfectly acceptable.

If you were under 18 at the time, your local Garda station may be able to help you with getting this record sealed. In this case, you may have to prove that it is your only infringement, and that you have been an exemplary citizen since (dress smart going in, show any work you've done and that you're studying towards a degree and hopefully you haven't had your name taken for anything since). There might be a chance in this. Even if not for the J1 this might be a good idea for anyone in this case if this move is possible as it can increase your chances of emigrating legally to anywhere outside the EU.
