hey...me and 9 of my buddies from cork headin to california this summer....2 girls 8 guys... we heading to santa barbara or huntington beach...just looking to see if anyone has been here before and which one would be better... any help with accom and jobs too wud b great!!!! thanks a mill...
Thats exactly what i wanna know!! Myself and 4 of the girls are head to CA for the summer also, were from limerick and were not sure wher to go, hunting r santa barb!! thing is i know ppl that went to santa barb last yr and said it was UNREAL they were mad to go back there again!! They stayed in Isla Vista it was within SB and thats where all the american students go for the summer! Im interested aswell tho to find out bout huntington, but dunno ne1 who was there!! Have you decided yet, as it was almost a month ago when you posted your comment!
I was in Huntington Beach last summer and it was amazing! I would def suggest it! The place is so safe, clean and just savage in general. We stayed in Breakers apartments which is the best place to stay, it had everything, pool,gym..etc and was a 2 min walk to the beach (which is unbelievable) and a 10 min walk to main street!!
Jobs are easy enough to find, at one stage i had 3 jobs!! most of my mates all had jobs aswell! Breakers is a young place all the people that live there are cool.
HB has a great location aswell, i went to san francisco (flew from long beach for$100, about 40 mins away from HB ), we went to san diego and TJ ( about 3 hours by train), the lads went to las vegas!! I heard Santa Barbara is so good though aswell, prob alot more Irish! It is one of the places i am thinking about maybe going this summer....so if anyone knows anything about it ....HOLLA!!

well we've finally decided on huntington beach!!! yay!!! we have just all got jobs sorted too which was very lucky...all 10 of us workin in the same place which is goin to b mental! syill lookin for accom....everywhere seems to b dead expensive! ross, where did ye stay when ye wer there...and wat was the cost etc??? also couple of us not gonna b 21, wat are they like with id over there?? have got driving licences made...hoping they will work!! gettin very excited now...booked flights other day so its all gettin sorted!!
Dont worry about ID too much, there was one or 2 places that wouldnt let us in ( none of us were 21! but we had drivers licenes) try get a back up id if possible, basically something with the same name as your other ID.
The best/only place to stay is huntington breakers apartments ( www.essexpropertytrust.com and ring them as soon as you can) they do 2 bedrooms apartments for about 1800 a month and they are comfortable with 6 people in them. They are a 2 min walk to the beach and 10 min to main street. there is an off license/pharmacy, dominos, surf shop,....lots more next door to them. God i miss HB!! Not sure if they are going to take more irish this year because there was about 60 last year and there was a bit of trouble, so i would suggest not to mention your Irish.
Me and a few of my mates are heading back to Cali this year as well. we are going to Hermosa beach in LA about 40 mins from HB, so if you guys get a place in Breakers I am expecting to be put up for a night or two when we visit....in return for all this information !!
Also i highly suggest on wednesday nights go to Malarkys Pub in Newport, about 10 minutes away, $2/$3 drinks, and $7 pitchers, it is class!

I worked in Baskin Robins (an ice cream parlour), shit pay, cool people thats about it though. I also working in a surf camp which was a great job, not great pay and early hours but we got to surf whenever we wanted which was cool. If i were you i would go to all the local bars ( freds, alot of Irish worked there last year, kilarneys aswell!). Check out craigslist.org for jobs....u might get lucky and find something!

hey supermadden, iv been reading your comments bout HB, me and a few othrs are seriously thinkin bout hittin Hb this summer was just wondering if you had any additional info bout the place. iv been on to the ppl at the breakers apts an they seem keen to rent us an apt but for a 6month lease which is shit but feck it. did they ask u to pay the final months rent in advance and how wer they in terms of credit history?? we rented two houses in san diego last summer an had a shit time wit our landlord bout credit history an rent..we ended up payin him our first an last months rent as well as a deposite up front cus we had no credit history..he was a conplete cowboy an im tryna avoid the same thing happening this year..how wer they as landlords in general?? as i said any info would be savage..thanks
well we got our jobs completely by fluke...i was just googling huntington and found this country club, i emailed them not really expecting much, but they emailed me back that nite offering us all jobs....they seemed really enthusiatic aswell!!

still no accom tho..... was lookin at breakers but they only do 6 month leases...anyone know if they are really strict on that, would they budge to a 3/4 month lease instead??

i've heard the surfing championships and the beach volleyball championships are bein held in huntington too this summer so there will prob b loads o jobs around because of that!
Last summer Breakers did 3 month leases although they were a bit more expensive then 1 year leases but still grand...they might have changed their policy due to all the Irish last summer...which is shit! You could always try get a 6 month lease then bail on it after 3/4 months....there is a chance you might lose your security deposit. last summer people bailed on 3 month leases last year after 2 months and they got all their security deposit !
Besides breakers there is not a huge amount of places to stay....last year there was only 4 groups of Irish (i think) that werent staying in breakers and there was about 50 or 60 in breakers!! Breakers is huge with about 300 + apartments! They are grand with credit history, we paid about $30 dollars each for a credit check, but because we didnt have any credit history we got it back! The only thing we had to pay up front was security deposit which was one months rent which as long as the apartment is in good shape you should get back most of it...but they try stiff you....we only got back $165 dollars out of $1600!! The staff of breakers are sound...... because its so big they cant keep tabs on everything but there is a security guard at night which gives out to you if you are too loud etc!!
If i were you I would really really try to get a place in breakers, it is so sweet there! its just so close to the beach! If you do get a place there check the web for jobs in the Hyatt...its a really posh hotel basically across the road...should make good money there.
The surf championships are savage the town gets real busy so if you have a tipping job you should make loads of money! I didnt hear of too many jobs at it at the time though!
hey, thanks a mill ross that was loads of help!! i e-mailed the breakers ppl sayin id take a 6month lease but she hasnt gotten bac to me yet!! ther def bein cautious after last year id say..60 irish students in one apt block sounds insane!! we lost a $5000 security deposite last year on two houses in san diego so we dont really mind losin 16oo this year!! im def goin to try secure an apt wit them..did u organise your accom ther befor u left ireland or wen u got over ther?
wat is HB like for house parties? and wats the story wit bars an clubs, ar they strict on ID?? im 21 but my sis an my cousin ar only 20 an 19..they hav fake drivers licences but they bascially laughed at them in san d last summer... also how much on average did u earn last year...we wer on minimum wage an could barely survive!! we wer so broke by the end of the summer it wasnt even funny...

HB is savage for going out! There wasnt that many house parties but there was always something going on! On the main street there is loads of bars. They were not that strict with ID's. Well you get asked everywhere for it but aslong as you have a drivers license you should be grand, and if u can try get a back up it like a bank card or something like that.
The pay in my jobs where not great but i had enough to survive. Keep an eye on craigslist.org for jobs, u might get lucky and find one, but i wouldnt worry too much. none of us had jobs sorted before we left and about 9 of us all got jobs in the first 2/3 weeks!
I would suggest to ring breakers, its probably the easiest way to do and you'll sort it out in no time!
hey aideen, ders bout 30 of uz headin to cali..mostly people that i met in san diego last summer!! we know wer not all gona get accom with each other so we'll prob end up getting a few different places. i was on to the woman from breakers and she said she doesnt know about availability for the summer yet but she'll get back to me. did u get on to her yourself? she's looking for credit and rental history. she doesnt actually seem to keen to rent to us, id say the place and their heads were wrecked after last year!! we've heard some good stuf bout santa barbra mite head there instead..apparently all the college there are dyin for people to sub let over the summer so they dont lose their apts for next year. an apt was wrecked by some ucd students a few years bac that had a sub let and im not sure how difficult finding some one to trust us is gonna be but if we cant find any where in HB prob end up headin there.

I e-mailed that Breakers crowd too, they said only year leases to me aswell so I'd say they ain't rentin to the Irish this year, maybe closer to the summer though if they not booked up they mite get desperate. Does ne1 know if there is hostel in Huntington to stay in? coz thats what we did in San Diego, stayed in a Hostel while we were lookin for Gaffs and all thanks to me (isn't that right Claire) we got a gaff, ha. Nah the Hostel in OB San Diego is unreal, ne1 goin to San Diego should stay there. If ne1 knows of a hostel in Huntngton give us a shout, thanks.
I was in HB last year....there was a hostel there but i heard it closed down, it was called huntington beach hostel ( obviously!). Other than that there is no more in the area!! Keep on to breakers if i were you and try get something there....it's the best option really!! Ross.

I was in HB last year and stayed in the breakers...They are def NOT goina rent to irish this year! they hated us, and complained us every night! almost every1 who went 2 HB stayed there so dont know of anywhere elso 2stay. anyways forget huntington, it gets boring, too quiet!
I was in Santa Barbara the year before and stayed in IV...it was a million times better!!We even went bk last year for a month coz we missed it so much!
I no some people stayed in an apartment complex on Beach Blvd and Edwards...google it and see what you come up with....also try www.equityapartments.com there is an apartment on this in Huntington but looks kinda in land!! but give it a shot. There was a hostel on 9th street but heard it closed down...check it out!

had a look at huntington when on j1 2 years ago...thought it was a bit quiet and everyone was a bit snobby. none of us were 21 either so we didnt stay long..
mite take alook there again this year...if accom is tough or expensive we mite go to Irvine college where there will def be accom cos of students wanting to sublet... tis not far away..

Oh god, can anyone help us?? there's 6 or 7 of us heading to Huntington Beach for the summer and we can't find accomidation anywhere!!! We tried that Breakers place too but there is no way they are renting to Irish anytime soon!
i've found a 5bed beach house for 10 lads 2500 sq foot and will cost us 40$ a week ,,soft !!.Pool furniture and jacauzzi as standard.Wats the story with working in a surf camp. fresh
Hey, there is 9 girlies heading to huntington but it's soooooo hard to find accommodation. I rang breakers at the weekend and they seem ok renting us 2 apartments but it's only a year lease. Does anyone know if we'll get into crap of we leg off after 3 months??? ( i talked in an american accent on the phone till she asked me for my number and was like "isn't that overseas?" But she still emailed me and hopefully we'll get it but we'll have to loose the deposit)
