Hey, Was hoping to get some info on doing a J1 in Hawaii. Heard it was pretty expensive (not including paying more for flights) to stay there and was wondering what other peoples experiences there were like? Went to Santa Barbara last summer and had a great time but thinking maybe of trying somewhere new so any advice would be appreciated thanks!!

Yeah I heard that the nightlife in Hawaii not the best, don't really want to be surrounded by couples on honeymoon either! But it does look like an amazing place. Ive heard that some peple managed to live cheaply there but not too sure.... Santa Barbara was really cool. I think a lot of people had heard rumours about them hating the Irish there so a lot of people avoided there last summer but to be honest no one there had problems with us, they didnt even know about problems the summer before. I don't know anyone really who had problems finding accomodation. Most people stayed in Isla Vista which is a little bit outside SB. The main college is there so the area is full of students. Since most students leave for the summer theyre all renting out their houses. We stayed in SB in little appartments called Haley Cottages just off state street (where all the jobs are). It was a really good location for getting to work but wouldnt really recommend staying there. Its owned by the main hostel but they try to rip you off and if you make the slightest bit of noise they go crazy. We were the only Irish who stayed there the entire summer. All the house parties are in Isla Vista so if you want to party a lot stay there! Its not the most scenic place but its fun. Only downside is that you'll be needing a car to get to SB or else you'll have to rely on the buses which arent that great. You'll always find house parties in IV, you can just walk into them! you wont get into clubs if you're under 21. Jobs also really easy to find. Since so many students leave for the summer practically everywhere is hiring. Places like American Eagle hire anyone that applies! Cant think of anything else but if you wanna know anything else just ask...you should really go there, its such a small place that you get to know a lot of people and they're all so laidback and friendly! im really tempted to go back this summer!!!

Hey. I 'm heading to San Diego for the summer and so far have been having trouble finding accomodation. Where did you stay when you were there and wheres good for jobs besides Sea World?... I'm planning early I know but heard its gonna be packed with students again this year so want to get a headstart. Anyone who's been there, advice would be great;)

Hey, i spent last summer in Waikiki on Oahu. Its expensive enough to live in compared to other parts of america but if you have a job you should be fine because you wont get paid less than 8.50 an hour plus tips. the nightlife is okayyyy.... its mostly bar-clubs, no proper nightclubs and theres not really much in the line of house or beach parties because waikiki is right in the middle of honolulu. If you know the right places theres no reason not to have unreal craic as the same time. It was brilliant fun and its a great place to go. More and more irish ppl there every year too.
I hear maui is more the beach/house parties scene and not as built up. suppose its up to you!

Hi! A group of us are goin to hawaii in the summer on the J1. We're thinkin bout honolulu/waikiki beach.Anyone have any suggestions on where to get fairly cheap accommodation or jobs? Wats it generally like there?
  1.
Hey there pep's... fairly same situation myself... flyin to honolulu on June 5th i think... but not positive yet weather or not stayin in waikiki on Oahu or to go to Maui. friend of mine from work went last year to kihei on maui and said it was absolutely brilliant, moreso for house and beach parties... however if u look at the official reviews on some tourist sites... area's like kihei on maui are supposed to be the least impressive. suppose it depents on what buzz ur lookin for. quiet-er less built up area's with more craic and friendlier people, or busier citly buzz with clubs and late bars... still haven't a clue myself but defo goin reguardless with just one other friend at the mo... but F.Y.I... if anyone is kinda in the same boat and is interested in meetin up over there and stuff drop me a line.... I think that the Kihei /Lahaina/Kaanapali area on the west is the only part of Maui suitable for a J1. Hana in the south is beautiful but good luck finding a job or a party scene there. I thought kahului and wailuku were dumps and paia was very overrated imo.
  3.
Still undecided between Maui and Oahu but it's starting to look like Maui now. Anmy tips on where to go for a good j1? Like soloparadfox said the west seems like a good place...
