You just make sure that you have your flights booked to come back for like 2weeks later and then you can change them once you get out there for like $100. The hardest part would be trying to find someone to give you work without papers

Yeah you can do this. you would just be like a holiday maker but your return flight would have to be booked for within 30 days of arriving. you would have to get a of the books job with pay in hand. but the big thing about doing this is once you have stayed more than 30 days without a visa you will never be allowed in the USA again. also u will have no medical insurance so if something happens to you u might be left with 10s of thousands of dollars of medical bills. I dont think its worth it.

Its 90 Days not 30 days. I did it last year, booked a 2week holiday and changed flight when I got over. I didnt need a visa because I was hurling over there and got a job in construction through the team. Your leaving yourself without anything to fall back on without a J1. You may also come across an american who will report you for seeking employment without a visa. Up to yourself, but if you are going to pay 7/800 quid for flight on top of accom, you may aswell spend the extra 2/300 on a Visa.

I'd say you'd want to have a valid reason for why you'll be coming home, and proof of enough savings to live there for the Summer, so probably in the region of 3K, they'll probably ask you about your plans while over there so have something solid. You might be ok, they might not ask, but I wouldn't count on it.

Most hostels will usually give travellers work off the books.Thats what I'm doin now though I actually have a visa. So check out the hostels in the area and see if they'll take you on
