Hey guys, I'm a bit of a Monica when it comes to planning so I can't help but start early lol. Just wondering is there many going to San Fran this summer. Iv been looking at all the top j1 spots an I think San Fran looks the best. I'll either be going by myself or with a friend but she's not sure yet. Anyway if anyone has any tips that would be great. Where to stay, jobs etc. I'd like to stay in the city as I'm 21 and wot need to stay in Berkeley for house parties. Thanks guys!
Hey KC, know the feeling about the planning. I'd rather be able to enjoy my first few days over there rather than worry wether i'll have a place to stay in a few days time. I've heard pier 39 is great for jobs and a Berkley frat house is the best place to stay, trying to find people to share with so let me know if you're interested! Lea.Flood@gmail.com
I'm thinking of heading to San Fran this summer, I'm heading on my own so I'd love to team up with a few people and have a house sorted before I get there. I'm 21 and in college in Dublin. You can give me a shout on bveroh@gmail.com :)
Hey, I'm heading to San Fran for my third J1 there next summer. Bringing a friend with me this time and flying out 1st of June. I've my job sorted and we'll be looking for an apartment (but not 10 people to live in the apartment, maybe one or two more) in the new year. San Fran is fine for jobs, it's one of the best places for J1 because nearly everyone gets a job and some get two part time ones to fit their own schedule. The problem with San Fran is the housing shortage they have. It is the most expensive city to rent in in the US. THankfully, it also has the highest minimum wage in the US ($9.70/hour). If you're over 21 and don't need the house parties, don't go to Berkeley. While it's easy and cheap to find a frat house to take you, they're disgusting and a pricey and long train ride from the city. Plus you have to pay for the whole summer up front and be out by August 10th because UC Berkeley go back around the 15th. Finding a place in the city can be like finding a needle in a haystack but it's well worth it. Hostels can be cheap to stay in week to week and if you get really stuck some of them will let you stay there in return for some volunteering at reception or cleaning.
Anyway, ye can get in touch and we can all stay up to date on the plans for SF 2012 :)
Hi :) Heading to SF with 2 girls and 1 guy at the start of June! Girls will all be 20 and guy will be almost 22 :) Don't really know what our story is with accommodation, would love the city but have a feeling we'll try get something cheaper in Berkeley because of the house parties etc! One of the girls used to live in SF though so might get lucky with something in the city! Really excited to get out there, hoping to get a flexible enough job so can actually enjoy the weather and city :)
hi there am heading to san fran with three other lads...wat is the best place for accomadation me and another lad wil be 20 when we get there other 2 at the end of june do yous rekon wed be better off stayin in berkley for them? cant wait to go now get out of poxy ireland just hope ive no repeats!!!! for anyone who was there before send me on the name of any waterparks over there as id love to do lifeguarding over there because its what i do here so would be dead handy?
@mchugh91 www.waterworldcalifornia.com is the nearest waterpark. it's 40-50 mins away by BART but I know a girl who did the commute for a whole summer while still keeping her job in the city and she managed fine. They do take on summer lifeguards, but make sure and bring your original lifeguard cert as well as copies and they'll probably make you do their own one day course sort of thing, especially to familiarise yourself with the slides and their own protocol. g'luck!
Lads whats the craic! a few of us thinking of heading over for the bant! whats the story with jobs around berkeley? or the city for that matter? whats the weather like? anyone been there before that would recommend the city or berkeley! about 12 girls heading over, some over and under 21!
Going to San Francisco or Berkeley on your J1??? Contact the Irish Immigration Pastoral Center (IIPC) a non-profit organization assisting Irish Immigrants in the bay area. We will help you find employment, accommodation and get help you get on your feet when you arrive. This year we will be hosting 4 J1 Orientations to allow J1ers a chance to meet one another and also get the scoop on work, accommodation and other useful info and advice. Free snacks and goodie bag for all who attend. The IIPC also hosts a FREE J1 BBQ at the end of June to welcome all J1ers to San Francisco and officially kick off the summer. It’s going to be a good one :-) For info and advice email: admin@sfiipc.org Like us on Face book - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Irish-Immigration-Pastoral-Center-San-Francisco/59584209409
Well group of 5 heading to San Fran, just wondering if anyone any info or contacts for accommodation??? happy to take what ever is going before its too late thanks..
Me and another friend are headin over to san fran. we are both 20 we are undecided between hungtington beach and berkely? which would people recommend as we are only both 20?
Me and a friend are also heading over this summer i must get a j1 but hes a citizen, what kind of jobs are available and how available are they would you want to have it secure before you go or could you risk it going over jobless( seems fairly risky) was hoping for something simple like waiting or cheffing on pier39 or something. Also has anyone just stayed in hostels for the whole summer, does it get really tedious or is it bareable just seems like it would be annoying living out of a bag for the whole time and moving every few weeks??? :~)
