Yeah Woodlawn is a great area :) I used to live a few minutes away from it when I was younger but been living in Clare for the past few years! Me and my friends are planning to do it this summer...but yeahh its a real Irish neighborhood, usually packed with J1ers during the summers....and you can get a house or apartment at a handy enough price esp if your sharing it cuts down the price :) Best websites to look for apt/house would be either craigslist or maybe the Irish Echo :)
Me and two other lads were thinking of Woodlawn next summer....hear its jammed with Irish. sounds really good....Hopefully there'll be a good few J1ers over at the same time there :)
Any idea on what the job situation would be like in NY next summer? Do many Irish J1'ers get sorted for jobs?? Two things I need to sort when I arrive....job and accomodation!
It shouldnt be to bad...your bound to get something like! When it gets closer to the summer there should be a fair amount of jobs/acc advertised on like Craigslist/irish echo/Aisling Irish centre etc :)

How are you guys applying for your J1? I have only started looking into heading to the US, and have no idea where Irish students are heading these days! Any websites/ advice would be appreciated.
I'm leaving the 27th May and coming back the 2nd of September. I have booked on my own but I have a few friends that are thinking about it. I love the idea of living in the city to be honest but I would be open to living somewhere like long beach or Atlantic beach. I will still be 20 which is annoying but I'm sure where theres a will theres a way :D
I do need people to share accommodation with though. Should we be looking now or is it too early? I'm probably gonna end up sleeping on a bench in Central Park...

Living in new York at the moment..was on a j1 there last summer aswel..here on an internship now..if your looking at places to stay, the best spot is probably Woodside or sunnyside.. Loads of good bars and very close to manhattan where the best bars are..Woodlawn is good aswel, it's just cuntish trying to get to work cos it will probably take u over an hr to get to anywhere in manhattan unless u take the metro north..overall new York is probably one of the greatest places for a j1..The crack will be had..

for anyone who gets here and goes looking for work in bars, 99.9% of the time your CV will land in the trash, ive been here since 2007 and every summer you get floods of J1'ers heading into bars with CV's. The bars in new york in summer are a lot quieter compared to the winter so bar tenders and waitresses who are here full time dont want to give up what hours they have, and if you do insist on taking CV's into a bar, make sure you speak to the owner/manager, most owners and managers dont come into the bars till around 3pm.
construction is pretty dry at the moment too and with mexicans standing outside home depot in there hundreds every morning waiting to be picked up and work for pennies its another hard one to get into
