Im heading to huntington beach or santa barbara with 3 of the lads, any no which is better? accomadation seems to be kinda expensive for both of em!! which is better for nightlife etc??

Just got back from Huntington Newport Beach area today and its a sweet place. Probably going back for the summer to be a surf instructor but i was checking out some other jobs. when you get over there, go to the DMV and get a Californian drivers licence, and apparently car valeting is a good job. All hotels have valet parking and the tips are unreal and you get to drive some big ass SUV's and other nice expensive cars as it is OC. Anyone thinkin of doing beach lifeguard the try outs are in march so that sucks. Didnt get a chance to check out accommodation but i reckon just find some like minded students here before you head out and arrange to crash somewhere. even if you dont know each other, it would be good craic!!
I spent last summer on J1 in HB - was an absolutely brilliant summer and I've been to San Diego the previous summer too (which was also brilliant but is a bit too overcrowded with Irish at this stage). Im sure from what ye have been looking up on net HB is a typical OC surfer town which it is - the beach is beautiful, the pier is huge and the shops, restuarants and bars are all typically californian and chilled out (this is during the day). On a side note looking out into the ocean you will see oil tankers in the distance which does take from the beautiful scenery, indeed there was also a few drownings last summer so beware of the powerful rip currents in the sea.
I really cant help with accommodation - we just waited until we got out there, the best sources are probably craigslist and the newpaper over there (sorry cant remember the name). I lived in a 3 bedroom apartment which started off with 13 people, moved to 17, then ended up with about 22. The apartment was about 2 miles from the main town area. Alot of the Irish in HB were very spread out - some got accomm. in the immiadete town area, some got accomm way out. I believe there was an apartment complex called 'the californian' where alot of Irish got living - its quite far from the beach but is on the bus route.
There are bus services in Huntington beach, however everybody in our house had bikes - I would definetly advise this as HB is very spread out and a bike can be cheaply picked up in Walmart - cycling drunk is also fun but can be sometimes dangerous.
Jobs are very handy to pick up in Huntington beach - it is a huge tourist area. I know alot of girls worked for a place for 'wheel fun rentals' right on the beach - indeed they got the jobs before they went over. I and a few others worked for a company called 'elite exteriors' going around door to door trying to generate leads for door and window sales - it was a great job, good pay, getting days off was easy and you got to see alot of the OC and surrouding area's in California. The way it worked was we all met at the office, we were divided among two vans, each van travelled to a different area then we were given routes in neighbourhoods to call to. Travel time was included in the pay, we typically worked 6 hour days, 5 days a week at $12 an hour, if you ended up with a sale you got a $200 bonus. Some of the lads are did does cycling taxi things which was tough work but they could rake the money in especially when the place is teeming with tourists and giving big tips - it worked off the beer too!
The nightlife in HB is limited but we always had a brilliant night. There are alot of good bars including Sharkeys, Crabbies, Hurricanes and the Beer Company - however they tend to pump the music really loud so you cant talk as much but drink more. The bars tend to close at around 2 I think. However the best craic we had was always in the house doing beer bongs, playing beer pong, playing drinking games etc. There will also be the odd house party too. The one major thing I didnt like about HB was that the beach closes at 10 and there is no alcohol allowed - we brought drink on the beach but usually had it disguised, the fire pits on the beach are really cool and usually draw a big crowd - the cops do come and kick people off the beach at 10 though which brings me onto my next topic.
The cops in HB are cunts. There is such a low crime rate in HB and the cops have such resources that they get bored - they are extremely strict and are just looking for some action. A number of our housemates got arrested for drunk&disorderly, most of them got warned at various stages. The cops were quite aware of the Irish presence last summer so be aware that ye wont go unnnoticed either this summer. Having said that the cops were only ever called to our house once about noise in the whole summer which is extraordinary considering the amount of people living there and when they did call they were courteous and let us off with a warning.
I cant think of much more to say I feel like I have left out alot so anybody else feel free to correct me or add to what I have said. I must also say the travelling part of the summer was absolutely brilliant as well and everybody should consider travelling for a week or two at the end of the summer while ye are over there. I doubt I have captured how brilliant our summer in HB actually was but everybody I know had an absolutely brilliant summer. Hope ye enjoy.
oh ya I forgot to say July 4th and the week of the surf open are absolutely brilliant. The surf open was one of the best weeks I ever had. There are literally 100.000's of people on the beach - there are arena's for skateboarding and bmxing set up that are all completely free to go into. July 4th is huge in HB too the whole street is lined with people for miles.

Hey s00063240, u mentioned that there were 22 of you staying in the 3 bedroom apt, what way did that work out? did u have to declare them as tenants or did u just keep the landlord in the dark about the whole thing? was it 'the californian' complex u stayed in? also as u spoke about bars ill raise the usual question about i.d? i presume by the way u spoke about them that ur over 21? thanks for the info it was a good input into the discussion. its much appreciated!!

oh no problem I remeber there was nothing but shit when we were trying to find out about huntington beach.
In relation to the tenants question: No we didnt declare everybody, there were only suppossed to be 6 people living in the place - we nearly got into shit so many times but our neighbours were really friendly about it, I think the landlord had a fiar idea by the time we left though. At night we would actually have to close the windows to keep noise levels down so we stocked up on fans because the heat would be killer.
In relation to the ID question: No I wasnt actually over 21 - I had a friends old passport, an isic card with my the same friends name but my photo and an old bank card with my friends name, I got in pretty much every night - the only place I had trouble was the Killarney bar, be aware that they have those lights (cant remember the name) that check for holograms etc. my friend had a fake irish driving license that still worked but he was always scared.
Downtown Huntington beach sounds perfect - the town area itself is actually quite small so if it says downtown your definetly close - if you want to be sure if you get the address of any place your looking at you could look up google earth.
one thing I forgot to mention is that public internet access is terrible i.e. there are hardly any internet cafes, however HB is pretty mucha wi-fi hotspot so if you have a laptop you can hop on for free - our friend did this but his laptop was destroyed by the end of the summer because everybody was completely abusing it
Anybody up for sharing with us, 3 of us, we have contacts in huntington beach, an estate agent, so we think we can an apartment/house pretty easy-just need people to share with to keep the costs down ????
hey people whats crackin!! myself and 3 friends are heading over to huntingon beach this summer, after searching for accom and gettin several warnings from various people i think we are gonna decide to go over there first stay in some cheap accomadation and look for a proper place to stay then. i cannot wait for this summer and hope HB is as good as it sounds, hopefully plenty of house parties, beach parties etc....bit annoying to hear about how strict the cops are but thanks for the heads up, hopefully ill only be arrested 3 or 4 times haha...

Cosa mesa isnt that far away either..right next door to HB in fact so it wudnt be a bad idea checkn that area out too!!....

yeah i agree with sineadj ....all the apartments are sending back application forms to fill out but der askn 4 credit and income etc...oh,and that fee 4 processing the applications is a dose!..and also faxing them back is a hassle too...with exams coming up and tryna get the filled app's back off everyone=A BALLS!!
