Im travelling to san diego June 4th on a J1 Visa - I know theres gonna be loads of irish students over there so its gonna be absolutely brillant! going with 4 friends but i have a question: we're all only 18 and I KNOW that we won't be getting served alcohol or getting into bars, but what does everyone else do thats under 21? i really doubt they all go 3-4 months without gargle!!!!
Phil_SD is right. Trust me, the house parties and beach parties are so much fun, you wont WANT to go to any bars or clubs. It's NOT Ireland you are going to. Drinking in SD is done OUTDOORS, not is some shitty bar where you can't smoke.

Damn, I wish I was a student again. I'd literally kill to go back and have that summer in SD again. Doubt I'd be let back in though :)

Pacific Beach has a ton of bars; PB Bar & Grill, Moondoggies, Cabo Cantina, Typhoon Saloon, Margarita Rocks. All of these are cheap (always some drink special going on) chilled out bars, relaxed dress code etc. More upscale in PB, there is Bar West and Tower 23. These spots have a stricter dress code and higher priced drinks. PB is more bars than nightclubs.
If you want to go clubbing, go downtown. Good spots are Belo, On Broadway, W Hotel, Stingaree, Altitude, and Martini Ranch. Dress code is stricter downtown and drinks are more expensive. Still ridiculously cheap compared to Ireland though.
It about 15 mins in a taxi or 40 on the bus so its fairly close, the bus is fairly regular so if u are heading downtown during the day thats your best option adn then taxi's at night
Honestly, I'd say you'll do maybe 2-3 nights downtown total over the entire summer. More fun to be had on the beach and at house parties at night. Check online though, "On Broadway" lets you sign up for the guestlist for gigs online and they usually have some pretty big acts. The venue is an experience in itself. despite the "I was in the military, I work out every day and have a spray on tan" US jock douchebags. :)
I was in SD last year, best summer of my life! I was over 21 and still only went out to a pub/club 2 or 3 times the whole summer. SD is all about the house parties and the beach.
Anyone know any good sites for cheap flights to SD, leavin from UK or Ireland? Really want to go back this year!
yeah im all up for houseparties but wudnt mind goin out properly a few nites!! i shud stick to the PB bars then?? wudnt mind goin and havin a good laugh at these spray tan guys tho lol...magee85: a few of us booked out flights on opodo.com which was quite cheap,i got mine for £426, but i suppose that was a good while ago now and the flight prices go up like mad. A few others booked theirs on orbitz.com, an american website, and i think that worked out even cheaper as they paid in dollars! good luck!
When heading out on proper nights you just head down to tj. the place is dodgy as hell but you wont even have a better experience in a club, $15 in and then free drink all night. i wouldnt head down on any day other than wedneday tho as this is when all the j1ers go. u seriously cant go to san diego without going to tj at least once every 2 weeks
