I will be travelling with 2 friends at the end of the summer. Will be spending time in Washington, Boston and New York. Has anyone stayed in hostels in any of these cities and which would they recommend? Have never stayed in a hostel before so I'm not sure what I should be looking for. Thanks

I stayed in a hostel In New York last November with 4 other friends... Cant remember the exact name of it but it was on Amsterdam Avenue...The hostel was fine but then again we are students and shouldnt expect much.... It has a good chill out zone, internet access, sandwhich bar etc... Im sure during the summer it will be full of backpackers, so id recommend booking early....We had to share our room with 3 other single travellers, but dont be put off its what staying in hostels is all about!! They also do tours of the city etc which im sure would be great in the summer... Taxis to Times square are not that expensive and are frequent enough on the road outside...The sub way is also a 100 yards down the road!!

hey Grainne in most big cities like Boston, NYC and DC you can usually find a decent hotel at a cheap enough rate!usually around the same as most hostels! also just to warn you NYC prices are ridiculous compared to anywhere else!!There is a lovely hotel in boston called the "marriot south boston" and its usually pretty cheap also for hostels there is a hostelling international in boston and new york both of them are very good and pretty cheap!also there is a decent hotel called grand union hotel in NYC which is pretty nice but as i said NYC prices are outrageous!Any other info you want just ask!

Thanks for the info. Actually found a lovely place in NY for 39.99 a night for a double so it works out better value than Boston or Washington. Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it lol

I stayed in "Jazz on the park", I believe that's where lcc stayed too.

Cheap and cheerful Best of all, the hostel organized a pubcrawl for all the pople staying so it was an amazing ice breaker, especially considering I was on my own. And yea, the SubWay is only a few yards away.

    hostelworld.com..great page
  1.
grainne, be careful with nyc hotel prices, the room wont actually be 39.99 a night, they add on a whole load of taxes on checkout such as the local city tax, javits convention tax etc. id say ur room is probably $50 a night in reality. this applies for all hotels in nyc...as somebody previously said, nyc hotels are outrageously expensive compared to anywhere else. good luck in your travels!
