    Hi everyone,

    I've seen a few people on this site saying they've been over to the U.S. with the 90-day tourist visa and got a job; according to them they just told the employer that they were waiting for a social security number. Do you actually need a J-1 visa and SSN to get a job over there?

    I'd appreciate any help clearing up the issue, cheers!

    About half of our house didn't have a J1 visa or a SS number and all got jobs.
    They simply said they were waiting on theirs to come through.

    Officially though, you DO need both.

    Did they have to find cash in hand work then? Do you need to get a SS number to be legally paid?
