Mobile Phone use in the
US is EXPENSIVE. Don't pay the rip off charges over there, get a MAXROAM
sim before you go and get a US and Irish number in one. Call home for
the price of a local call from your mobile!
Ill drop her a mail and hopefully this thread will get others interested. Anyway, Im sure there will be people in the hostel in the exact same position as us.
no mate, not yet. I usually stay in bannana bungalows but its booked up so not sure what we are gonna do now. I really wanna try and secure a house/appartment before i arrive, but should prob have a hostel for backup.
Yea, myself and that Girl Jane have booked teh ocean beach hostel. Arriving ont he 1st. Were looking for accommodation also. If you hear of anything...
havent sorted a hostel yet. Trying to sort a house at the min. Have a guy that we know in san diego to go view some properties for us tommorrow. I am from Banbridge (co Down) but live in manchester cos at uni here.
heya guys! im headin to san diego 4 the summer wit 3 other friends! n am lukin for a house? jus wonderin wats the craic wit d best place to live n d best place for jobs! were flyin out on the 1st of june n i really wud lik to hav sumtin sorted b4 i head out!any one have names of potential places to wrk? i no about sea world...but dnt no how to apply for jobs der r neting! sur jus give me a msg bac plz if u no neting! thanks a lot x x
Sue, they don't start taking applications until mid June anyway. you just go up, fill out a form and they call you back for a drug test. (They take your hair). I don't know anyone who applied and didn't get the job. Half of San Diego was working there.
Theres LOADS of work when you get there. Don't worry about a job, worry about a house. if you can get a house sorted before you go, you're VERY lucky. If you get it, just pile a load of Irish you meet in and your sorted.
In San Diego though, its VERY hard to get a place when you're actually there. The good thing is that in your hostel, there will be LOADS of Irish and last Summer, no one was left homeless. I think we had over 40 in our house for 3 days over the summer. Good times. Good times.

Hey guys. I'm heading out to SD on June 4th with 4 other girls. we are looking for a place to stay in either ocean or pacific beach. Can anyone suggest a place to look for a house/floor space, or a place someone has stayed in before. Thanks
First of all, be aware that it is incredibly difficult to find a place unless you get there early. You are literally competing with hundreds of other Irish trying to find somewhere. If you read through this post, you will see I went on my own last year. I met up with Clair and her sister and we got a HUGE group together. 27 people I believe and we all lived together in two kind of attached houses.
We stayed in Ocean Beach, but we were VERY lucky. The San Diego Reader comes out twice a week, and no matter how early you get up someone always seemed to have it earlier than you.
We got out house as I said by luck. We rented out bikes from our hostel and cycled around the whole of Ocean Beach (We didn't want to stay anywhere else) looking for "For Rent" signs and calling the number. That is probably your best bet. There is a guy that runs a mobile phone shop just off the main street in OB (Newport Avenue). AVOID HIM LIKE THE PLAGUE! HE IS A GANGSTER AND A CROOK!. Do not let him talk you into "renting" with him and certainly do not buy a phone from him.
If you're thinking of staying in Pacific Beach, be aware that it is VERY spread out and not very ... well, homely. OB is small and everyone knows each other, it's great. Most people who stayed in PB ended up staying in TINY apartments and the police are ALWAYS around PB so be ready for sessions to end pre 3am.
Jobs are a not a problem to find (Isn't that right claire) ;) just get over there early and you'll be sorted.
Be prepared to live like a dog for the summer. It will be the best summer of your life.
Hello folks, theres 3(20 year olds males) of us heading to san diego early june-were are most definitley j1 virgins and know very little about san diego,we would be interested in sharing accoamadation with anyone,so anybody interested in it give me a shout!
hey me and four of my friends are headin to San Diego on the 5th June. itd be great to share with a load of people- the more the merrier & would keep de rent down...more money for other activities! anyone know of good places to stay?
hey,was in san diego 2005 and the best summer ever!its hard at first because of social insurance but after the first month everything settles down!trust me, its hard but its worth it. my advice would be to book a hostel before you go....the ocean beach international hostel or banana bungalows in pacific beach!ocean beach is the best laugh and its in the hostels that all the j1ers help each other out accomadation wise.i went over with my 2 best friends and we got a great apartment in PB with 4 people we met in the hostel. PB is the most popular place for the irish to live..
Hey me and a few mates are heading out summer 07. The only thing is our uni doesnt finish until late june so we'll be arriving late june early july. Does that mean we'll be screwed for gettin jobs and accomodation? Also havent got our J1's yet so any advice on the cheapest way of doin that would be much appreciated!cheers
hi,is any one booking into the international hostel in ocean beach or the banana bungalows until they get sorted with a house? does anyone know where the hostel is that the j1 students go to with the classic option with usit.
pmadden, OBI hostel is amazing. Seriously, stay away from banana bungalows if you want to drink on the beach, have a fire on the beach and not have a 10PM police inforced curfew. BB is all well and good during the day, but at nighttime...not so much.
You actuall have to stay in OBI Hostel if u go to San Diego.....its a new rule, I just made it up.......its unreal had the best summer ever in San Diego and the 2 weeks spent there was a major part of the reason........amazing place.......if you do go there tell Tennesee Jon says hello and has he quit the bullshittin yet.....hes quite annoying.
anyone going/been to to carlsbad? im thinkin that i'll probably be headin there. sounds good - near enough to downtown san diego/ocean beach etc. but not just full of other irish people. i'll be headin on my own so if anyones looking for another body to help out with rent lemme know!
hi ya p.madden me nd 2 friends r going to banana bungulos on the 5th for a week looking to share acoom afterwards it seems impossible to get ant b4hand leave a msg if ur intrested
hey me and 4 of the boys are headin to san diego on june 5th. And we're up for the pacific beach, ocean beach idea. Could any one tell me though do you need to have the hostel booked before you leave???
Papadioup, yea, you probably should. The place gets filled up pretty fast. The OBI hostel in Ocean beach tries not to leave anyone out. People who were really stuck were allowed sleep in the tents and in the TV room. Bananna Bungalow is a dive and you should stay from it. :)
If you're going to San Diego, go to irishoutreachsd.org, its a non-profit organisation, run by Irish people to provide assistance to Irish immigrants and J-1 students in San Diego. We can provide answers you have about San Diego that may have not been answered here.
Michael, Carlsbad is about 45 minutes by car from downtown San Diego, doesn't have alot of public transport and is a very residental area. I'd keep to the beaches or downtown SD.
hey, heading to SD this summer. Just wondering is it the norm to have to send over the deposit now in order to secure a house? Found a house in Pacific Beach, it couldn't be better, but the guy wants $2000 deposit now. He has had loads of interest but whoever sends him the deposit first gets the house. Just looking for some advice on how we should go about it.

Hey we're two 19 year old girls from Dublin looking for people to share any sort of accomodation. We're arriving 10th June 07. This is our first J1 so we've no clue! HELP! We also have no jobs ... does anyone know if you can apply to SeaWorld online??!!
Hey Eli and Ali, for Seaworld, you need to apply directly when you get here, but they have job listings on their site or go to irishoutreachsd.org/employment, we have listing of places to get jobs, we also offer assistance to Irish J-1 students free of charge, so if you have any questions, go to our website.
