This thread is for discussion of accommodation sharing in San Diego. Have a house to share? Need a house? Travelling alone and want to make sure your sorted before you get there? Post here.
Going to San Diego this year with four friends but reading a lot of forums saying this year wil be a disaster for accomodation and jobs.Anyone else thinking the same?does anyone know of any places to get accomodation before we go,were not having any luck
What have you tried Claire? You used any websites? I was looking into it but my problem is because Im going on my own, there's nowhere that will give me a house.
I was thinking of just saying that I AM going with a few people, then hoping I can get housemates when I get over there. But I don;t want to risk that now.
i think San Diego would probably be my second option...in the mean time i m still searching for some jobs in LA:)...i posted on the other one....my ym id is mamutzoi...see you there
Right Folks this is the craic. I was in San Diego in 2003 and yes ther wer parties ( House warming Parties, General Parties, Keg Parties, Birthday Parties, 4th of July Parties, Eviction Parties( to get out of 6month leases). Well anyway the criac with parties is that wen ever thers a party everyone and anyone will turn up, even the police. Advice is to party early on in the day and not to the early hours of the morning, coz thats wen the neighbours get pissed off.
People got arrested for drunk in public wen leaving parties, obvilously coz they couldn't stand or they wer being abusive to San Diego's Finest (the Police).
I returned in 2005 despite the horror stories, its what you make it! We managed to get accomodation and jobs, ok it took us two weeks to sort everything out, but then again my friends and I are not the most pro-active characters. We enjoyed the beach bum lifestyle too much.
PB in the summer is nothing compared to what its like during the academic year with the University students, its just because we're Irish and frankley don't give a flying yeehaa what we do when wer out of are own country.
San Diego and Pacific Beach rely on people like us to come over and spend all our money. If they don't rent accomodation to us, well they won't rent to anyone, cause all the American students head home or off somewhere else during the summer months.
If anyone wants to get any further information, please ask and i'll be happy to help....
OK, I think at this stage, Im just going to book a vacation rental , maybe a house on Pacific Beach and just hope I can get housemates. Seems like noone can make their minds up.
I think people are worried about not being able to get jobs there, but I havn't heard of ANYONE who wasn't able to get a job last year.
i'm up for san diego now. well planning on flying out there anyway. but if i dont get a job there i'll be moving on up the coast to huntington or wherever!
Jane, that's EXACTLY my plan. Lets get a few more on board, get a house sorted and we don't have to worry about the summer, we can just get excited. :)
Try and stay in the Banana Bungalow Hostel on 707 Reed Ave, off Mission Blvd in Pacific Beach. Ther is a local newspaper/magazine thing that comes out every Thursday but you can normally get it on a Wednesday nite from 7/11 or Ralhps or Longs.
It has loads of rentals for all the areas in San Diego. Rent a one or two bed and load it up to the hilt, to bring the rent down. I think we manage to pay $20 a week with 8 of us in a studio, but as i said you basically just sleep ther.
Oh and ALSO California is warm but wen your by the ocean it gets chilly at nite so bring some warms clothes... Its a mistake i made the first time, but not the second.....
Pacific Beach Mission Beach Ocean Beach - however it is a little bit away from Pacific Beach.
Go on to Google Earth and take a look at the areas above, PB is by far more happening interms of bars and parties...
http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html download the program and check out San Diego from Space.
Anywhere close to the board with Mexico shud be avoided... Wednesday nites in TJ, Mexico take bout 5years off your life but are worth it, becareful though you may only be 10 miles from America buts its Mexico and those Gringo's will take advantage of people likes us, so stick together, safety in numbers...
If you have trouble gettin accomodation near the beach ther is also areas in land Like fashion Valley, and ?Claremesa?(not sure of the spelling). You can get a nice apartment in an apartment block with a pool, tennis courts and allt hat but its nothin like living a short walk form the beach.
Also bring a Tri-Band Mobile which is unlocked with you and get a Cingular sim Card $10, last year all people on Cingular could talk to each other for free providing they had credit on ther phone and texts back home wer 5cents... Hopefully it will be the same this year...
And open a bank account with Wells Fargo in the first 2 or 3 days and lodge most of your money in ther to keep it safe, coz some people last year had money stolen while in some hostels. it shud take bout two weks to get you Wells Fargo Bank card which was well useful for renting cars for your Big Road Trip at the end of your stay...
Jane, are you in Dublin? And are you flying into San Diego?
Skinann, thanks for all the advice. I am planning to get a place in Pacific Beach somewhere. I here it's brilliant. I have friends that were there last year, and they said it's definitely the best place to be.
Hopefully, someone will rent me a house and we can pack as many people as possible in.
I was considering going to head to LA for the comfort of knowing others were going alone, seems there are also some going alone to San Diego which was my first choice. So I booked my flights to SD.
Yea, I think I'm going to go with that. Will probably book it later tonight. Just in case there's demand.
I'm also speaking with someone about a summer rental of a three bed place for the summer. It's pretty decent and only a few blocks from the beach. Are you guys interested?
I was in touch with a lady renting her house in the summer, I was referred to her by two girls I know that stayed there during their J1 summer two years ago.
I'm still waiting to hear back from her, but I was in touch with the administration of Avalon. I have read a good bit about it, its like a community and apparently a few J1 students stayed there over the past few years. It was even recommended on the sayit site. Its got a pool and is close enough to the beach and SeaWorld (Where I hope to get a job if i cannot get a bar job)
I want to get a 3 bedroom and pile in as many people as possible (Within reason) to keep the rent down.
Just trying to see if anyone is interested first. if you want to get in touch, you can email me dave_davis {at} vodafone.ie
Aparently not, I have had a few offers of accommodation already but I'm still at this point alone, so..... It's kind of hard to commit to a lease when you could potentially be taking it all on for even a month!
hmmm......it seems so expensive, craigslist is great though. See me and the g/f wanna share a room but I havnt found much of that. the cheapest seems to run at least 150 a week
yea, at the moment. Anyone who wants to tag along or meet up are more the welcome. we fly out May29th. Sharing would be ideal, were thinking Mission, Pacific Beach.
Got a reply from avalon, they said they will lease for 3months, but the rent is slightly higher and the first month PLUS deposit needs to be paid up front.
Is anyone still interested in sharing accommodation in SD?
No, were prob gonna book into the banana bungalows for the first week till we get our bearings. Accomodation seems to be fairly plentyful....no end of accomodation on craigslist!!!
