Hey. I stayed in Montauk with 3 of my friends for the summer of 2007. The place is amazing, but it is quite far away from NY City. The best place for accomodation is the Montauk Motel. The only thing is they only take on girls. We stayed in the Ronjo motel. It was right in the centre of town which was great but the place was a kip. we payed 125 each a week which is actually the cheapest accom i heard any1 had got out there. Theres always a great buzz with the Irish students there. Other good places are the Lakeside Inn, Rushmyres or if your willing to stay out by the docks theres the Tipperary, or Anne Briers i think the place is called. It is better accomodation out there but you will need to get taxis all the time. Like to be honest most of these places will allow just the 2 of us to stay together because they know most of the irish havent got anything booked.
ive been looking at soo many. Download google earth and you can see all the places and the distances between them. I found Montauk motel looks gud its 1200euro for the three months but you have to stay for that long which is a balls for me :( need 5 sharing too and theres only me and my friend.

I'm doing my J1 to Boston this year, but I did visit a friend who went to Montauk last year and she worked and lived in a motel called the Albatross... think it was the Albatross east I'm not sure. You could try there if you want. It was right on the beach, she seemed to like it. Anyways just a thought in case anyones freaking out.

ive not heard of much trouble with jobs coz its really only a summer resort. Ive lookd up accomodation n its expensive at like 160 dollars a week per person but u make it bak when u get a job and the rich people tip well! i know a few people who have gone ova the last few years and dey loved it! im just goin with my frend aoife!
Do you and your friend have a job sorted or waiting until you are ova there? $160 a week thats pretty rough,but yea a bit work ans some tips from the rich folk should sort that out.I was lookin at places in TampaBay and its the same prices really plus bills :-/ i was thinkin of a handy job in Bush Gardens then chillin on the beach everyday after work but Montauk has beaches n sun too.Where did you get your j1,we've still to sort ours out! shouldnt be a prob tho

i was in montauk last summer and it was unreal. Here's some advice which you may or may not find useful.
The bars stay open till 4 in the morning,. Everyone pretty much heads out every night and the beach is unbelievable as well. You're also guaranteed to see your fair share of celebrities-such as Paul McCartney, Sarah Jessica Parker, Chris Martin, the Drummer from Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
Nearly all the Irish stayed in either The Tipperary Inn, Ann Breyers, or the Montauk Motel. It is true that the Montauk Motel only takes girls. We stayed in the Tipp. It was a good laugh. Loads of Irish around. Having to get taxis isn't that bad. They're only 3 euro per person. Alot of people get bikes over there as well. Most of the places are a kip so I wouldn't let that put you off. If it's not a kip when you move in it certainly will be after a few days. Rushmeyers doesn't exist anymore in case some of you are trying to contact them. The tipperary inn also doesn't have cooking facilities. You can get a hob and kettle and stuff but its just a warning for any of you that like your comforts! Seascape is another option. Only a few people stayed there last year but its cheaper than the Tipp and Ann Breyers and is only about a 10 minute walk to town. The fella who runs it is meant to be a bit dodgy but as are the owners of most of the other Motels so don't let that put you off. Also I wouldn't necessarily worry too much about booking before you go over. The Tipp had loads of room last year although Ann Breyers was booked out.
On the jobs front I would definitely recommend a waiting job. In places like the Surf Lodge, Shagwon, Gosmans and other restaurants people were making 2 or 300dollars a night. People working as waiters/waitresses were rolling it in while the rest of us struggled! If you don't have experience just lie. You'll pick it up soon enough! Alternatively if you want an outdoor job then try the Pathfinders sports camp. The pay isn't great, but you'll be outdoors all day, finished at 3, and your job will consist of playing football or canoeing with rich kids. Also if any of you have any bar experience then definitely try the Tipperary Inn Bar. The owners Ed and John Kenny like to hire an irish person who also plays the guitar and sings, to bartend so if you can do either then its a fairly sweet number. It's generally packed full of Americans and Irish and again you'll make at least 200dollars a night. There are plenty of jobs to go around though. Way more than the likes of San Diego. It's a holiday resort so they're always looking for people.
