am going crazy looking for accommodation, is really really hard! i got a job out in waterworld (www.waterworldcalifornia.com) which looks really cool and are hiring loads, but its out in Concord which is a half hour bart trip from berkeley.
we had a place more or less ready to rent but when we worked it out it was too expensive. it was in the fillmore center. i've been on craigslist everyday but not having any luck.
theres 4 of us 2 guys, 2girls and finding it hard to get accommodation, booked into a hostel for the first week so we'll see how it goes. might try get a big house in the city if anybody's interested. we're flying out on the 24th may.
anybody have any contacts for working on a building site?!
yeah same ere cant find anything, there is 9 of us headin over the 29th May. there only seems to be 1 or 2 beds available and the 3 beds house are mad expensive even with the 9 of us! Id say berkely is the best bet for us now. booking hostel this wk think we r staying in the green tortoise.
no luck on jobs either! emailed a few but heard nothing back.
im sooooo jealous of everyone heading to san fran.....was there last summer!!!! your going to have an AMAZING time! if any1 has questions i'll try my best to answer....accomm, where to stay, NIGHT LIFE, jobs, I.D....
alri mullo, whats d craic?! where do ya think is the best place to stay?! there is a group of 9 of us heading the 29th May but cant find anywhere in san fran city!! think we r just goin to try berkley it seems to be cheaper and more accom available. hav ya got any contacts for jobs?!?
hey i stayed in berkeley last year BEST summer of my life!
defo stay in berkeley BEST place ever try 2 stay near college ave but u will find accomadation when u get der.. ders a few clubs/bars(but der is always a house party) der but get an ID if ur not over 21 dey ask every1!! loads of people got jobs in waterworld in concord they employ every1 (gauranteed job) which is like an hour away from berkeley which is annoying and is ROASTING out der 2!!! loads of people got jobs in abercrombie or in the shopping centre on market st in sanfran.. but try down the tourist spots like fishermans wharf etc i know people who got $100 dollar tips a night in some of the restaurants in sanfran! u will have the BEST summer in sanfran/berkeley!!
there's 4 of us from dublin going to san fran on the 24th may and we're staying in the green tortoise for a week (at least!)
did you look on craigslist for jobs/accommodation?
we're finding it real hard to find somewhere at the right price... looking at splitting up the group maybe, as loads of people are just renting room for quite cheap. some of them have two rooms in houses to rent. check it out here, http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/roo/
Hey Jen... did you stay in an apartment or a frat hous?? because there is only two of us going, a frat seems easier, but not having luck.. do you think we'l be ok to get one when we get out?? thanks
I dont really know much about staying in frats, i stayed in an apartment but there was 9 of us,we found it when we got there because the some of the UC berkeley students dont go home until june. there is places called co-op in berkeley kinda like frat houses but much better n they have really good parties, try the UC berkeley website for summer housing or google frat houses in berkeley n contact them, they are meant 2 be really cheap but i went to a couple of parties in them and found them disgusting but thats my opinion i did meet people who stayed in frat n had the best summer and since its only 2 people would be much easier to find just a room in a frat, there are loads of frat houses in berkeley n i really dont think u will have a problem finding accomadation. from what i can remember they are around the same area.. sorry i wasnt much help with the frat houses, hope u find somewhere soon but i tink u will find a place when u get there.
u will have the best summer in berekely and sanfran ia amazing!!!
hey gary, we found our accom wen we got over there, the minute you do, go straight onto craigslist, you'll find a place in no time as you can view them, and u generally take the first one u view....def stay in Berkeley...best place to live, loadsa irish and house parties, places to look for jobs would def be waterworld in concord, its terrible workin there, but u guaranteed a job, id say they employed half the irish over there last year, surprise there willing 2 tak use all on again....there were 26 irish life guards wrkin there, 16 of em called in sick 1 day aftr a house party, they had to close dwn rides n all, it was gas, but ul get away with murder!! not literally!! its hard tryna get a job in berkeley but try Peoples cafe on shattuck and other cafes etc...also if ur hot go to abercrombie, theyl hire you immediately (once u av ur social security-apply for it immediatley, takes weeks to get it!!) good luck, ul have a ball.... by the way streets that are good for accom in berkeley are....dwight way, college avenue (prob best place).....
cool, yeah hopefully we will find a job soon when we get over there. we are staying in the green tortoise too for the first few days anyway and we should get accom somewhere its too hard to sort it out from this end!
hey moe, im going on the same day! email me! -- laura_daly_@hotmail.com
getting really annoyed, people keep telling us yeah, our place is free, and then when i email back they dont reply for aaages and then go sorry, no longer available. this has happened 3 TIMES now!! panicking.
1 double room (for 2 people), 1 bed in a double room sharing with 1 guy, 1 single room in massive BayView house. We are 2 Irish students (1 guy, 1 girl) who will be living in the house.
The place takes the same time to get to as Berkeley on the Muni (half the price of the BART). It is less than a minute walk from the stop. The house is massive, landlady is furnishing it the day before we move in (30th May). There's an oven/cutlery/microwave and all that, laundry will have to be done in the laundromat about a block and a half away.
The rental period is from May 30th-August 16th, rent is paid the month in advance. We have a strong preference for people who are ready to move in on May 30th (or willing to pay rent from that date).
Price: $400 per person per month for the double room. $600 for the single room.
There is also a security deposit of $567 each which we HAVE to give to the landlady on the 30th. As we can't come up with $3400 between the 2 of us by then, you would need to get this to us somehow before that date even if you are not here by May 30th.
Utilities (electricity/water etc) are included in the rent.
Well students If anybody is interested in staying Pi Lambda Phi International Fraternity out in Berekley, I have 5-6 places available for J1ers, rent is around 400 dollars per month per person!! Interested parties reply to staggerz606@hotmail.com before wenesday 27th of may
hey, there's two of us irish girls heading over on the 9th....does anyone know if it's at all affordable to stay in the city area?? getting stressed now it's so close and we're not finding anything.are we gonna be stranded homeless??we'd love to get another few ppl to share a one or 2 bed if that works out cheaper....anyone interested????
We,ve been staying in a hostel in san fran since saturday 31st, there's about 6-10 of us. Having a lot of trouble finding a place to stay, everywhere is very expensive and most are looking for a 1 year lease minimum. Not sure what to do.
i got here on the 24th may and all we had was a hostel (green tortoise) booked for a week. we just went on craigslist everyday and eventually found somewhere within a few days.
most places do look for 6 - 12 months minimum but there are a few just looking for summer rentals. there was 4 of us and we now have a 2 bedroom house by the beach in a lovely area called Sunset. its right beside the beach, and the Muni line N (local transport) has the terminus 2 mins away that takes about 25-30 mins to get into the centre of town.
while in the hostel, we met these girls from galway and there was 10 of them who found a place quicker than us because they were able to get a more expensive place. as there was only 4 of us thats why we went a bit outside the city, but its great out here by the beach.
cool...ok.tom if any of ur gang dop out and yer looking to add a few in gimme a shout cos there's only 2 of us:-) sunset sounds savage...fingers crossed!
hey, been in San Francisco now for just over a week.... so far we're having no luck with accommodation its ridiculous!!! there are six of us in total, every place we've viewed so far they want credit checks so we're gettin nowhere! has anybody any advice and tips? maybe another site to look for houses other than craigslist? have many of ye been in the same situation and found a place eventually or have many people actually left san fran because of this?

Hi quinnd, Just some advice: A lot of J1ers do stay in berkeley and it is easy to commute in and out of the city on the Bart. (approx 30mins) However the Bart stops running at midnight and you would need to get a taxi cab from the city back to Berkely after midnight. For e.g. after a night out in the city or if working a late shift in the city. Also most students will get employed in the city and it can end up quite expensive getting cabs in and out of the city.
