hey guys, was in san francisco last summer and stayed in berkeley in a frat house. It was called alpha sigma phi, so you should totally get in contact with them for accomodation. If your under 21 I'd really recommened living in berkeley as there is always plenty of parties so you wont have to worry about i.d.
Rent was only like 60 a week so it was really fair a lot cheaper than living in the city (im goin to cape cod this year and the cheapest is 100 a week!!!). The house is HUGE, there was something like 40 in it last summer but the guys are really cool and we all got on great!!there are loads and laods of frat houses and you'l prob find them on the university of california website but there are some dodge ones that had rats and stuff! but even if you dont get booked into one before you go out just go to berkeley and go to piedmont avenue and walk around and knock on doors, you'l find something

Berkeley is really cool, there is loads of irish out there, and all the frat houses are around piedmont avenue, which is about a 25 minute walk or 10 minute bus journey to the BART and main street in Berkeley. Its a 10 minute walk from telegraph st., which is like stepping back to the 70's, coolest street ever.

so if you are under 21, unfortunately even with a fake i.d. you wont be able to buy drink anywhere. But with a fake i.d you will be able to get into kips. Blakes also lets in over 18 on thurday night just have a few drinks first and there is also a karoke bar that you can get into with fake id but cant remember the name.

SF is only 30 minutes away by BART, and Westfield shopping centre is really good for jobs!! Also try virgin, and i worked in banana republic on grant ave., and Levis too in union square. You can also try and get a job in fishermans wharf, bubba gumps took on 2 girls in our house and they earned serious money! And the bike companys on the wharf should be tried too. Abercrombie and Fitch will employ everyone, but they are crap to work for!! Remember though you need to get your social security number as soon as u get out there, the berkeley office is the quickest.

    And before you leave san fran there are a few things you should do;
-cycle across the bridge and out along the coast and stop in sausilita nicest town ever and get the ferry back, bout $30 for renting the bike and the ferry. Bring a camera!!
-book your alcatraz visit online as its always booked out
-go to the gay pride parade at the start to july, great day out, and then drink at the civic centre after
-go to an outdoor movie in dolores park in castro
-visit haight street girls for some great deals in the vintage shops
-go to zacharys pizza place in berkeley, best thing you'l ever have
    - get cheap flights to vegas with virgin airlines and stay in the stratesphere, we squeezed 6 into 1 room
-dont bother with l.a. its crap, everyone said so
  1.
Jaysus that sounds like totally cool...........We just wanted info on accommodation in San Fran...not you life story!!!

    hi all,

area's that you should concetrate your search for housing would be north beach, soma, alamo square, marina/cowhollow, sunset/parkside, haight ashbury, nob hill
areas you should not look at are bayview, hunterspoint, tenderloin...these are all very dodgy...

here is a link that may be usefull http://www.dreamworld.org/sfguide/Neighborhoods/index.html

also berkely will be an attractive proposition to many people but it is a bit of a dead town and may be difficult to find work in...the commute to the city will get annoying if you find a 9-5...and the cost will add up...as for looking for your housing use www.craigslist.com it is how everybody local to sf finds accommodation...beware of ads from trinity management....the offer short term leases on fully furnished apartments that will include all utilities...my friends and i were looking at a place and we had to fill out applications for them. at $50 a piece...they said they wanted proof of $30,000 between the 4 of us which we had and when we came to orgainsing it we needed proof we were earning $90,000 a year or had a co-signer on this money...i wouldnt waste your time on any of their properties.... craigslist will also be usefull for jobs and furniture to furnish your apartment.. when looking for jobs you will most likely just have to go out and get application forms and fill them in and then attend a group interview....

if you are looking for hostels or hotels for the first few night check out www.hotwire.com this will get you cheaper prices but the catch is you dont know what the hotel is you are staying int...there is a way around this though as they give you the location on a map..you can easily just go onto www.hotels.com and find the hotels that are offered on hotwire...although the hotels on hotwire are not given their name they are all quaity and recognised brands..

jope this is helpful to you all

For anyone of you J1ers that might be looking for accommodation in San Francisco this summer, we are looking for a roommate willing to share a room from beginning of June till the end of August. We are looking for a female roommate… We are three American students, ages 20-22. Rent would be $665 including utilities. Our apartment is located in a very nice, and calm area of the city by San Francisco State University. It’s not in the middle of downtown, but public transport is located within walking distance from our apartment. Since we’ve lived here for a while, we would also be more than glad to help any newcomer to the country, and to our city. For more information contact me via e-mail mapayia@hotmail.com. My name is Maria. Thank you! cheers!

PS: If you are travelling with a friend and dont want to live seperately, there is the possibilty of splitting the living room and creating an extra bedroom, which would of course lower the rent. This can be discussed later

    Hi J1ers,
If anyone is heading to San Francisco this summer make contact with the Irish Immigration Pastoral Center.
    Email: admin@sfiipc.org
Add us on Facebook: Search Celine Kennelly or Irish Immigration Pastoral Center!
We are a Non-Profit organization assisting Irish Immigrants and we always help out J1ers!!
We can send you our J1 information handbook covering info and advice on Accommodation, Employment, Getting about and lots of handy tips.
We have a list of employers that hired the J1ers last year which is a good starting off point to go looking for work.
We will also be organizing some events for you over the summer.
We had a J1 BBQ in Golden Gate park last year and it was mighty craic!!
When you arrive in San Fran pop into the center on 5340 Geary Blvd, Suite 206 (Between 17th and 18th Avenue) it is a great meeting place to hook up with other J1ers!!!

Wishing you all a fantastic summer!!!

Well Sinead... Not to fear, you should go. You will meet loads of people from loads of different places and you will probably find that Irish people on J1 tend to have a very positive and very different attitude than when they are at home; helpful, sound, generally class like. Well I am heading over with a friend of mine and will be living in the city and you would be more than welcome to join us if you wish? Caution though the place is probably going to be small, as rent is SOO expensive in the city, which means there could be 4 in a small space as was my case last Summer. However I wouldn't change that for anything as it was some craic :) Look me up on fb --- David S Quinn --- and we will see what happens.

    L8rs

    Dave ;)
