This thread is for discussion of accommodation sharing in LA. Have a house to share? Need a house? Travelling alone and want to make sure your sorted before you get there? Post here.
planning on going to LA. have to get my flights booked by the end of the week. going alone. posted b4 about going to LA. my email address is jane83@hotmail.com. have been considering san diego but a lot of people saying its going to be tough for jobs and accom!
if we're all going to LA we wud have to decide where abouts before getting a house. i'm still considering san diego though. some people are saying you'd be fine with jobs and accom there, and some say you wud'nt! just cant decide!
If your determined you'll find Accomodation and a Job in San Diego, I've been twice and have got accomodation and a job both times. Also if you haven't been on a J1 before get the Visa, but in my experiences i have never got a job wer they ask to see it, although they wer painting jobs and other under the table jobs.
Ther is a company i think call Prostaff or Staffpro, they deal with event security. I worked ther and did such events like Jack Johnson& Ben Harper, Street Scene which is somthin like Oxygen but without the camping + loads of other events with famous artists.
The pay is alright, they make you pay for your uniform and somethin which is called a guard card ($120). But we did prctically nothin but walk around the event as if we were'nt workin...was good criac if a bunch of you do it...
Seaworld is close to Pacific Beach, San Diego and they are constantly employing Irish, but be prepared to take a drugs test, mostly looking for hard class A drugs, and don't get pissed the night before, they'll fail you if you have too many units on you..
Cheers James, all your info is very much appreciated. Yea, I decided, I'm definitely going to San Diego. No point going to L.A IMHO, at the end of the day, it's another city at the end of the day.
Thanks for the heads up on the drug tests too ;) Smackheads and kiler whales.....
Santa Barbara is the place to be, not LA. If you want to suffer shell shock and be pestered by bums, go to LA; 100 miles up the coast is the city of Santa Barbara, an absolute paradise, but because it's got 3 universities there's loads for students to do, and loads of jobs when the locals leave for the summer.
Stay away from Isla Vista, which is 15 miles away from the city - there's no jobs, no transport and the landlords aren't too happy to have Irish back (but there's no problem in Santa Barbara; if you don't get anything sorted before, just stay at one of the hostels; the one by the beach is the best)
Thanks Keira for the advice. Did you stay in Santa Barbara? What hostel did you stay in? Did you go with friends? How long did it take to find Accommodation and a job?
Yes, we tried LA first, then IV, there were 4 of us girls and IV was too scummy and all the jobs we had were in Santa Barbara itself; jobs were real easy to get because all the local students head home for the summer and the places on the beach and State Street are screaming out for staff. I made over $100 a night in tips at a restaurant called Paseo Nuevo.
We stayed at the Santa Barbara Tourist Hostel for the first 2 weeks, it was a great craic, then moved into an apartment complex called Haley Cottages; there were lots of Irish staying there but also other students from other parts of Europe (also on J1's).
ok,i was also in SB last summer...read my post. i stayed in the the haley cottages for the first few days before moving to the SB tourist hostel and then to Isla Vista. and omigod i would die before i had to live in the haley cottages for the summer. its located on a street full of homeless people.theres a drug abuse clinic almost beside it and its so terrifying to walk down that street at night coz of all the weirdos. theres like 6 apartments and theyr falling down.theyr disgusting and 2 sets of girls next to us got broken into and got loadsa money stolen from them on the first day. they are shabby little wooden shack type things. the beds were gross, we only had a freezer and no fridge and the showers were vile. advise: don't stay there
anyone interested in gettin a job at raging waters in LA here is a 5 bedroom house nearby. im thinkin strongly about it. think about it sun all day, for the guys its lots of girls and for the ladies its lots of guys, and good pay for givin out to kids tryin to drown each other.
check this house out tell me wat u think. its like 75$ a week http://www.apartmenthunterz.com/guest_view_listing.shtml?keyid=43494393
yeah i have decided its L.A for me now, it was my original plan but was kind of thinkin S.D then but its definitly L.A now, cant wait, really excited now,
You were at Haley Cottages? You had a different experience from us! We loved it, walking distance to State Street (where all the jobs are) and the beach (which is where all the other jobs are!) No problem with cleanliness, and we found the staff friendly enough.
myself and afew others r thinkin bout hermoca beach aswell this summer,any1 know wat itl b like 2 live?if ud b able 2 gets jobs etc...wed nearly consider house sharing if we found a big enough house
Hey... would seriously advise people not to go to LA. its really nothing like you see on tv... its just a city n really shabby n just not a place ud want to spend the summer cos u would seriously run out of things to do... go to Santa Barbara an hour drive from LA its a fabulous city... live in Isla Vista the college town outside the city totally mental all house parties and mixture of irish and american stiudents.. you can go on a trip 2 LA which is cool 2 visit but seriously absolute;y NOT FUN 4 living in...

Hi Toby, there' two of us (girls) heading to LA for the summer. We're finding it really hard to get accommodation because it's really expensive aswell for just two people. What have you found so far? Any leads on jobs yet? we'd be interested in sharing. Whereabouts are you from?
We're from Dublin. Yeh you're right it's expensive for small groups. That's why we're getting a larger house and sharing. It works out cheaper and you get to stay in a nicer place. We've got at a few places lined up at the moment, just trying to work out how many we'd need to fill a house but the two of you are welcome to share with us. Still looking into the jobs. You can email me at: j12009@live.ie
