could any one tell me thats been there before preferabbly whats the story with getting accomadation and how much is it normally a week and where's the best spot to get it?heard jobs are handy to get is that true...also wats the story with gettin into nightclubs and getting drink if your not 21 yet....sound
i was there last year, i stayed above my work 'trimper's rides'. u will be able to get in there if u apply. accomodation is bollocks but its better that way cos they dont care if u wreck it, we had a tremendous laugh loads of people stayin in the appartments and theyre right next to the beach. only problem is the job is mind numbing with long hours, but they were good people to work for, they didnt care if ur hungover at work/late/need to piss off and be sick, and if u request fewer hours ul probably get it. english speakers got treated much better than those pesky russians. if i went again i would probably get a house on or around 7th street, thats where most of the irish stayed n the parties were dynamite. most people i knew just sorted accomodation when they got there, and jobs were easy to come by as long as u dont go out too late (first 2 weeks in june should be early enough). my main advice is beware of the police, they will do u for anything
and the id situation was ok, i was 21 but people i knew were gettin in with fake passports and other peoples driving licenses, photocopies as well. just as long as uv got somethin we didnt have much trouble
the best places when i was there were pickles pub on a tuesday, its an irish bar on 7th street, not hard to get in they were takin photocopies. also the angler cant remember what street but it was dynamite on a sunday, again easy enough to get in as long as u got somethin to show the bouncers. seacrets is the biggest club, but its expensive and harder to get into. wen u get over there, ul find out wheres good on what nights. trimpers pay was like 7 dollars an hour, slave labour basically but beggars aint choosers n all that. theres a good mix of folk workin there, im from glasgow n there were other scots and irish n a few english even, and alot of eastern european girls if that info interests u! but to be honest the job can be torture so thers pros n cons. but anyway i hear this year west coast the place to be ;)
Great stuff! CANNOT wait.. 5 or us booked flights today got them for 510, flyin from Shannon to London to Washington to New York all in one day, leavin galway at half 3 in the mornin and arrivin in new york at half eleven that night, gonna be some craic, oh and the 7 hour bus journey to ocean city after sleeping rough!
I'm in a group of 9 from dublin heading to Ocean City. Flights are booked and accommodation nearly sorted. We might be able to offer a 10 bed apartment fairly cheaply for the month of August, if any one wants it. We have to book it for the whole season but we're only there for June and July.
Yeah tbh i knew washington is closer geographically so thought we'd fly there but then found this online about going to W to OC ..
" It can be done, but it's not incredibly convenient or pleasant. Change of buses in Baltimore. 5.5-6 hours total travel time. 2 buses per day (9 a.m. and 3 p.m.). There's also a 6:15 a.m. run that requires two transfers and doesn't get you in all that much earlier than the 9 a.m. run, so it's hardly worth a mention"
I checked on "Greyhound" (like our bus eireann i'd say) and if you choose washington to OC you leave one day at 3pm and arrive the next at half five pm, fuck that! And from NY it was only 6 hours or somethin. Just saw on the site that OCMaD is gettin the accom from that they can pick you up at washington, is that how you got there?
OCMaD you should put that up on boards.ie or somewhere about cheap accom for august cos a lot of people dont bother with the j1 and just come for a month to visit friends or whatever
nah i was stupid and booked flights through my sponsor that only went to new york so i got an 8 hoour bus from there. most people i knew got the greyhound from DC to ocean city neva heard any complaints. my bus needed a transfer, then dumped us in salisbury n left us 2 pay a taxi rest of the way ourselves, they are fuckin useless! buses r full of j1'ers tho so i met loads of folk not all bad. student centres im not sure, probably be able 2 find out on the internet, but everybody just gets the greyhound tbh
