Most jobs are around Main St and docks. Some real estate brokers handle rentals, try www.capecodonline.com which is the daily paper. Homes/apartments South of Main St. would be the best for easy walk-to places. Social Security Office (to get your work no.) is off of Main St. Many students also stay in West Yarmouth which abuts Hyannis. A source of jobs in West Yarmouth might be the Cape Cod Irish Village, www.capecod-irishvillage.com. Two years ago a new Irish Pub opened on Main St. called Tommy Doyle's Irish Pub, seems to be a focal point for the J1s this past summer.
When we went, hyannis was where all the irish stayed and yarmouth had some irish but they all regretted moving there as it was dead, we stayed on sea street, nautical drive, 4 homes there owned by same land lady, all rented by irish but she was a bitch and will wreck ye're head for summer.....lincoln rd ( but not on sea street ) I think is the name of another road wich has a cheap house to rent , fit 4-6 easy has a garage with pool table well back from neighbours and it had the best house parties all summer, can fit about 100 people and it really is worth a look if I have the name of it right.....other than that sea street was the place most irish got homes, lots of estates off it and just past nautical drive on the left is a block of apartments, they are good and let out to irish...........jobs, gringos hired everyone for waiting tables, also most restaurants on main street hired irish.....go to the ferry company and you get a nice paid, piss easy job going over and back to nantucket and marthas vineyard all day sat on your ass.....only thing though is some ferries go at 6 am !! so you could be caught out for early shift......I did landscaping, tough work but the best paid , shit load of them on the cape, also you out in sun all day building muscle from the work so you will look like a polish guy in the gym if you do that all summer lol I came home like a tank over it.........................cycle is the best way around , go to landscaping places early in morning before they go to work for day if you want that job, other than that, the supermarket hired a lot of irish but you stuck in it all day and see nothing, just keep asking around and network, best way to find out what the score is over there, irish will help each other once you find them, we all had like a community thing going and found each other jobs so prob be the same again over there.........oh yeah and if you have full licence avis car rental at the airport pay well
For accom., you might try Craigslist - Cape Cod. I would advise against sending any $ before checking out the rental. Many students initially stay at a motel called the Cascade, on Main St., across from Bus/train station (easy, easy walk). They are low cost, not attractive and have hundreds of used bikes to sell/rent. I would recommend staying at a motel initially upon arrival and looking for a rental the first few days.
Heading to Hyannis with two of my friends, just wondering would you have phone numbers or email adressess for the house on lincoln rd or similar cheap student houses. Were really trying to find houses but its really hard over the internet and they all seem really expensive and not suited for students staying the full summer. Also sorry to be a nusance but the ferry job sounds savage, did you get that before you went? Any contact details for them? or any other jobs? would really prefer to sort some kind of job before going?
Thanks a million, Sorry for all the questions. My email is pinkjellybabies@hotmail.com
HEy Cork boi, Thanks for all the info so far on hyannis, i'm heading over with 5others in june, just wondering how you found accom?? we havnt been able to find anything online thats reasonable.
If using Craigslist for Hyannis, link to Cape Cod. J1s usually put 'Irish students looking for...' in their request. It has helped Irish students in previous year. I have a 2 bedroom condo for rent in Hyannis but it is for year-round tenants. Sorry. Good luck.
Been a while since I was on here, I will try give as much info as I can, but it has been 5 years so a lot could have changed there since then, My email is mahony8@gmail.com, who ever wants more info mail me on that as I rarely go on this anymore.....I will try ask my mates that were there with me too about work accom etc.... so bear with me, so anyone wants more info you know where to find me !!!
