I'm doin my first j1 this summer and am just saving up as much as i can before I go. If you have about 2 grand you should be able to make it last relatively long as food and beer are much cheaper there. accomodation will be the biggest cost thats why you should look into sharing with other j1'ers to keep costs down thats what myself and two friends are doin.
